When the Pittsburgh Penguins opened the third period with two goals in 41 seconds, they came close to making history.
The Pittsburgh Penguins entered the third period against the Calgary Flames down by a goal and, to that point, playing pretty low-event hockey.
Things changed pretty quickly when the Penguins started the final frame by grabbing possession and scoring just 18 seconds in.
23 ticks later, they found the back of the net again giving them the lead just 41 seconds into the period.
Those two goals to kick off the period turned out to be pretty significant, not only for the game, but for the franchise record books.
The Penguins two goals in 41 seconds against the Flames turned out to be the second fastest pair of tallies to start a period in franchise history.
The fastest time occurred during the 1980-81 season when George Ferguson and Greg Malone each scored in the opening 29 seconds in a game against the Chicago Blackhawks.
This time around it was Bryan Rust kicking off the final frame from a bad angle behind the net, followed shortly by Reilly Smith on a feed from Evgeni Malkin.
Rust and Smith’s tallies turned out to be the kick starter for a five-goal period from the Penguins.
Jake Guentzel followed with a goal of his own just five minutes later, then Malkin piled on a fourth unanswered goal to give the Penguins a 4-1 lead.
Rust notched one more goal on an empty net to solidify the Penguins’ 5-2 win over the Flames.
