According to a new report, the Pittsburgh Penguins could be trying to add to the blue line.
The Pittsburgh Penguins are still under the midway point of the season but seem to already be on the hunt for some roster help.
According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman in his written 32 Thoughts, the Penguins have ‘asked around about defense.’
President and general manager Kyle Dubas said a few weeks ago that he was hoping one of the team’s depth defensemen would step up and run away with the third line role.
The Penguins are stacked with third pairing defenders who have NHL experience and can serve as good options in the lineup.
P.O. Joseph and Chad Ruhwedel are still around while Dubas added names like Ryan Shea, John Ludvig, and Jack Rathbone at the AHL level.
Rathbone has been an important piece of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins blue line that has numerous other names with NHL experience.
Friedman did not dig deeper in defining exactly where on the defense Dubas is looking to add, but the Penguins haven’t been blown away by the early work of Ryan Graves.
Head coach Mike Sullivan recently demoted Graves to the second pairing and while Marcus Pettersson has emerged as the better option, Sullivan stated that performance matters.
The Penguins have plenty of defensive options, but even with the surplus, Dubas might add some more blue line help.
