Carl Hagelin was one of the most important members of the Pittsburgh Penguins 2016 and 2017 Stanley Cup runs.
It may not come as a total surprise after he missed all of last season with an eye injury, but Carl Hagelin, a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Pittsburgh penguins has announced his retirement from hockey.
Hagelin made the announcement via Instagram post and used multiple images of him winning the Cup with the Penguins as part of the slideshow.
A reason for the retirement, according to Hagelin is the eye injury that kept him sidelined for the entire 2022-23 season.
Hagelin has also undergone hip resurfacing surgery during his rehabilitation process.
In the post, Hagelin used the images of him winning the Cup with Pittsburgh, as well as he and the New York Rangers winning the Prince of Wales Trophy in 2014.
A few pictures of his days with the Washington Capitals, including one where he is one of six players crowded into a penalty box.
Hagelin also used a pair of pictures from pre-NHL including one with his time at the University of Michigan.
Through his career, Hagelin played in 713 games and recorded 296 points; not much of an offensive producer, Hagelin became most known for his speed and clutch performances.
During his time with the Penguins, Hagelin appeared in 195 games and counted for 83 total points (27G-56A).
Most notably, Hagelin was the H in the famous HBK line with him, Nick Bonino, and Phil Kessel during the 2016 Stanley Cup run.
The following season, Hagelin scored the empty net goal to seal a second straight Cup victory.
Before Hagelin’s career was cut short, he was a crucial member of the back-to-back Cup teams for the Penguins.
