Flames Block Penguins from Talking to Brad Treliving

The Pittsburgh Penguins want to talk to as many people as possible, but the Calgary Flames are getting in the way.

Kyle Dubas has removed his name from consideration for the vacant Pittsburgh Penguins general manager position.

For over a month now, the Pittsburgh Penguins have been compiling a list and conducting interviews for their open front office positions.

The list of known possible candidates for the Penguins have grown to almost 20 names as Fenway Sports Group (FSG) planned to cast a wide net.

Some of the candidates include former general managers, up and coming faces, and even a few reunions, but there is one name that likely won’t be going anywhere.

According to Pierre LeBrun of the Athletic, the Penguins wanted to talk with Brad Treliving, but the Calgary Flames blocked any communication.

The Flames have not allowed Treliving to explore any new job opportunities and will not let teams talk with him until his contract expires on June 30.

It’s a strange, and frankly unfair move by the Flames, as the two parties agreed to part ways at the end of their season.

Treliving won’t be returning to Calgary, yet they won’t let him look into a new job until it is likely too late.

The Penguins want to make a hire soon, possibly before the week comes to a close, and June 30 is far too long of a time to wait.

June 30 is the day after the 2023 NHL Draft and the day before the opening of free agency.

Treliving likely wasn’t the FSG or the Penguins’ top candidate, but the groups wanted to talk to as many people as possible and the Flames are playing hardball with someone they already know is departing.

The Penguins will continue their search while Treliving likely misses out on a number of great job opportunities.
