Brian Boyle played his final NHL season with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
After 14 seasons in the NHL, including his final one as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Brian Boyle has officially announced his retirement.
Boyle capped off his career with the Penguins after signing a professional tryout offer prior to the 2021-22 season.
Initially, it wasn’t certain Boyle was going to make the team out of camp; he had just taken an entire season off and at the age of 36, it wasn’t guaranteed he’d be able to perform.
The Penguins needed a center, however, as both Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin were going to miss the start of the season with their own respective injuries.
Boyle not only made the lineup, but played 66 games in his final season with 11 goals and 10 assists for 21 points.
Standing at 6-foot-7, 244 pounds, Boyle played 871 career games and tallied 141 goals, 111 assists, and 252 points.
Boyle was never known for his offensive production, but used his size to become one of the league’s most notable grinders.
In September of 2017, as a member of the New Jersey Devils, it was announced that Boyle had been diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia, a form of blood and bone marrow cancer.
After 13 months of fighting, Boyle announced that his leukemia was in full remission.
Boyle’s perseverance and dedication to the game after overcoming his form of cancer earned him the 2017-18 Masterton Trophy.
In November of 2018, Boyle scored his lone career hat trick, not only against the Penguins, but did it on Hockey Fights Cancer Night.
Boyle is moving from the ice to the broadcast booth as an analyst with the NHL Network.
