Former members of the Pittsburgh Penguins were traded for one another just days before the opening of training camps.
When Casey DeSmith was dealt away from the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Erik Karlsson deal, it seemed clear he wouldn’t stay with the Montreal Canadiens for long.
With just days before the start of training camp, DeSmith was shipped out of Montreal for another former Penguins skater.
It was announced that DeSmith was traded to the Vancouver Canucks for Tanner Pearson and a third round pick.
To add another layer of irony to the trade, former Penguins front office executives Jim Rutherford and Patrik Allvin are president and general manager in Vancouver.
When DeSmith suits up for the Canucks, it will be the second NHL team he has ever played for and he will create a new tandem with Thatcher Demko.
DeSmith spent 134 games between the pipes for the Penguins and picked up a record of 58-44-15.
Pearson’s time in Pittsburgh was much shorter as he only played in 44 games during the 2018-19 season.
Rutherford and Allvin has been collecting former Penguins this offseason as they added defenseman Ian Cole and forward Teddy Blueger during free agency.
