This is Kris Letang's fourth time being the Pittsburgh Penguins' nominee for the Masterton.
There isn’t a more deserving player for this honor within the Pittsburgh Penguins’ organization.
Kris Letang was voted by the Pittsburgh chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association (PHWA) to be the Penguins nominee for the Masterton Trophy.
Every year, the Masterton is awarded to the player who “best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey."
All 32 teams in the NHL get a nominee, and this is Letang’s fourth time being the Penguins’ selection.
The 2022-23 season has been unimaginably difficult for Letang, yet he’s still one of the best players on the team.
During this season, Letang suffered the second stroke of his life and was back on the ice in just weeks, he suffered a lower-body injury that kept him out of the lineup for a period of time, and his father passed away in early January.
Despite all of that, Letang has played in 62 games and leads Penguins defenders with 11 goals and 28 assists for 39 points.
Even at the age of 35, Letang is still one of the most gifted and driven players in the Penguins lineup.
Letang is still averaging an obscene amount of minutes with his season average ice time sitting at 14:49.
Injuries and ailments are nothing new to Letang, but he still managed to reach 1,000 games played, a number that he was never certain he’d hit.
Letang’s previous three nominations came in 2014, 2015, and 2018.
