The Pittsburgh Penguins won, but so did everyone else in contention.

The Pittsburgh Penguins won, but so did everyone else in contention.

The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday afternoon pushing them back into a wild card position with two games remaining.

The only issue for the Penguins are that the Florida Panthers and New York Islanders won their respective contests a few hours later.

At the end of the night, there was no real movement in the race for the Eastern Conference wild card.

The Panthers held on to wild card spot one, while the Islanders remained at two, and the Penguins are still on the outside looking in.

Despite the victory over the Red Wings, the Penguins’ chances at the postseason took a slight drop.

According to moneypuck.com, the Penguins have a 42.9% chance of reaching the playoffs, a decrease of .8%.

With their wins and placement in the standings, the Panthers (78.7%) and Islanders (78%) still hold the highest odds of the three main teams in the fight.

For the Penguins to sneak their way back in, they need to simply win more games remaining than either the Panthers or Islanders.

All three teams have three just two games left; the Penguins and Islanders have both won two straight, while the Panthers are riding a six-game winning streak.

The Penguins have a pair of the worst teams in the NHL remaining on their schedule in the Chicago Blackhawks and Columbus Blue Jackets.

They need to win both of those and hope either the Panthers or Islanders lose somewhere along the way.

The Penguins are only one point behind both the Panthers and Islanders, and an overtime loss from either team doesn’t help, either.

The Buffalo Sabres still have an outside chance of making the playoffs, but it would take a minor miracle for them to reach the dance with their .4% odds.
