The Pittsburgh Penguins could be just a small step away from getting the executive they've had their eyes on all along.
From the very beginning of the search for a new general manager for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Fenway Sports Group (FSG) had their eyes locked on Kyle Dubas.
FSG had Dubas at the top of their list, even before the Penguins gained permission to speak with him.
As the first round of the playoffs spilled into the second and following the Toronto Maple Leafs exit from contention, it seemed as if Dubas wanted to stay north of the boarder.
Dubas went as far as to say it was ‘Toronto or nowhere’ during his final press conference, and sending an email to Maple Leafs President Brendan Shanahan expressing his desire to stick around.
FSG and the Penguins needed to move on and look for other options, they were pretty far into their search and close to a hire when a wrench was thrown into the mix.
Shanahan and the Maple Leafs decided they no longer wanted Dubas as their general manager.
The way the breakup occurred, however, opened the door for the Penguins to take another shot at Dubas.
The Penguins requested and received permission to talk with Dubas, and now it seems like he is almost certainly taking a job in Pittsburgh.
According to Chris Johnston, Dubas is ’98% he’s going to be taking a job there.’ While Johnston couldn’t put his own percentage that high, he understands the thinking.

FSG made Dubas a top priority from the very beginning and he was in Pittsburgh meeting with Sidney Crosby.
“The mere fact that he’s going through a process where he’s talking to the star player, franchise icon, would suggest he’s at least very seriously looking at the opportunity.”
It isn’t exactly clear what position Dubas could be hired in, as the Penguins have a number of different possible openings.
The Penguins have been without a president of hockey operations or general manager since their first day of the offseason.
At this point, it seems like they got their guy, it’s just a matter of getting full confirmation and making the announcement.
