Ryan Martin Could Take Next Step as Penguins' GM

Ryan Martin is a familiar and experienced option to be the next Pittsburgh Penguins' general manager.

The Pittsburgh Penguins officially have the 14th overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, but should they be looking to trade it with under two months until the draft?

The Pittsburgh Penguins continue to search for their new leadership team, with their general manager and president of hockey operations positions still vacant. The ownership group is apparently interviewing their initial candidates, and the rumors of who is apart of that group continue to build. The latest addition to the rumor mill is current New York Rangers assistant general manager, Ryan Martin.

Background

The Penguins are very familiar with the work of Martin. He's been working for the enemy, serving as the assistant general manager of the Rangers and GM for their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack, since August of 2021. Martin comes with nearly 20 years of NHL managerial and administrative experience, working in the Detroit Red Wings organization from 2005 until his hiring in New York. He also has a championship pedigree. He was a member of the front office team during the Detroit Red Wings 2008 Stanley Cup run, and oversaw Detroit's AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, en route to a 2017 Calder Cup championship.

In his current role, Martin plays a key role in various departments. Running the minor league affiliate, he constructed a playoff caliber roster this season and is watching that team still contend for a Calder Cup trophy this postseason. But his contributions extend well beyond just the AHL. He's a premier scouter, with his abilities also being utilized by Team USA's junior and world championship management teams. As an assistant to team general manager Chris Drury, Martin supports in contract negotiations and analysis and salary cap compliance as well. With the Penguins looking for a skilled negotiator and salary cap, it seems that Martin could be a seamless fit.

The biggest concern regarding Martin is he has not held a general manager position at the NHL level. Similar to some of the other reported candidates, Martin has a wealth of experience in all areas except for the actual positions they are looking to fill. There's no doubting he has the skillset and potential to do it, but it's anyone's guess if he can do it well.

Fenway Sports Group is faced with a daunting task. Selecting the right managerial team is crucial to extending the careers of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Martin is certainly an intriguing candidate, but it's unclear if he's the right choice. If Martin is ready to take the next step however, the Penguins could be looking at a prime choice for their next general manager.
