The Pittsburgh Penguins got more than just two point with their shutout win over the Nashville Predators.
PITTSBURGH - As the Pittsburgh Penguins fight for every point possible to retain their position in the playoff race, every win is important.
Even with inconsistencies refusing to subside, the Penguins not only found a way to get another timely win over the Nashville Predators, they did it with a shutout from Tristan Jarry.
The 2022-23 season hasn’t been the greatest from Jarry; injuries and volatility has made his future in Pittsburgh foggy.
A big shutout victory like this, however, is a huge boost not only for Jarry, but the team as a whole.
“He’s working hard,” Jake Guentzel said. “We have all of the confidence in the world in him. He’s a world-class goaltender.”
Jarry wasn’t tested heavily by the Predators’ offense, but he made stopped all 28 shots he faced.
That was by design as Penguins defenders are doing everything they can to mitigate the amount of shots their goalies see.
“That’s something we’ve talked about the last couple of games,” Jarry said. “Not giving teams second chances, blocking shots, getting pucks out.”
Mike Sullivan felt a similar way in that Jarry didn’t face a lot of high-danger chances, but stopped every look the Predators had.
“I don’t think they had a lot of quality looks,” Sullivan said. “But the ones they did, I thought Jars made a couple of real good saves. He was there when we needed him.”
Regardless of how many shots Jarry had to face, the Penguins picked up a win that could help push their momentum forward down the stretch.
While looking for wins, the Penguins are doing all they can to collect as many points as possible.
“Something we spoke about with the team this morning was having that playoff mindset,” Sullivan said. “And that we raise our intensity level.”
The players know what’s at stake for them and they are looking at every game as a playoff contest, no matter the opponent.
“It’s just a mindset,” Jarry said. “You have to be at your best this time of year. We need points.”
Well, the Penguins got two big ones with the shutout win and will hold onto their spot in the postseason.
There are now seven games remaining on the schedule meaning there is much room for error, especially with the Florida Panthers in the rearview mirror.
