PITTSBURGH - One of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ top prospects is about to take a big step in his development within the organization.
With his season ending with the Swift Current Broncos, the Penguins have re-assigned defenseman Owen Pickering to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the AHL.
This will be the 19-year-old’s first taste of professional hockey and a move up following a great season as the Broncos’ captain.
In 61 games, Pickering scored nine goals and recorded 36 assists for 45 points; all of which were leaders among blue liners.
Standing at 6-foot-4, Pickering has played in 146 games in the WHL picking up 87 points (20G-67A).
The Penguins drafted Pickering 21st overall in the 2022 NHL Draft and he immediately became one of the organization’s top prospects.
There isn’t much in the Penguins pipeline, but Pickering is a notable standout who has a chance to be a leading defender in Pittsburgh.
