The Pittsburgh Penguins might have Jake Guentzel back in the lineup far sooner than initially anticipated.
When the Pittsburgh Penguins entered training camp, they weren’t certain if star forward Jake Guentzel would be around to start the regular season.
New president and general manager Kyle Dubas stated he might miss about five games, and Guentzel started training camp on the Penguins injured list.
Just over a week after the opening of camp, while still skating with other injured players, Guentzel took some reps with the rest of the team.
Guentzel skated with a white non-contact uniform but looks to be taking major steps forward in his return to health.
There has not been an updates on his timeframe for a full return, but head coach Jake Guetnzel is happy with the progress.
“We’re really encouraged with how far he’s come,” Sullivan said. “This was his first day joining the team practice.”
In Guentzel’s place, Vinnie Hinostroza took reps alongside Sidney Crosby during practices and Rickard Rakell played on his off wing during the Penguins last preseason game.
Crosby himself is encouraged by the progress Guentzel has made and is looking forward to seeing his return to the team.
“Sounds like things are going well,” Crosby said. “Any time you see a guy join the group, it’s usually a good sign.”
The Penguins play their next game in Halifax, Nova Scotia and while he likely won’t play. Guentzel will be on the trip and taking part in the team bonding experiences.
