The Pittsburgh Penguins are certainly a better team, but do the odds makers believe so?
Missing the 2023 Playoffs is without doubt one of the biggest disappointments in recent memory for the Pittsburgh Penguins, but this upcoming season might be far more successful.
New president and general manager Kyle Dubas did a lot to revamp lineup and the Penguins should be a much improved team because of it.
They may be a better squad, but the key faces are a year older and the metropolitan division continues to get better.
Can the Penguins find their way back into the postseason or even contend for a Stanley Cup?
If you look at the betting lines, the Penguins are almost certainly finding their way back to the playoffs, but reaching the Cup might be a bigger challenge.
With a simple yes or no, sports books are giving the Penguins some pretty good odds to make the playoffs.
Sitting at a -185, the Penguins are among the teams more likely to make the dance rather than miss.
While it’s a good bet to make, saying the Penguins will make the playoffs isn’t where a lot of the money will lie.
The value bets can be found a little deeper, like saying the Penguins will end the season as leaders of the Metropolitan Division.
At +650, the Penguins are in the middle of the pack as the fourth best odds in the Metro.
The Carolina Hurricanes (+175) and New Jersey Devils (+240) stand ahead of the Penguins, but the New York Rangers also file in with a +650.
The New York Islanders made the playoffs last year over the Penguins, but are a distance fifth to win the Metro with +1200 odds.
As for winning the Eastern Conference, the Penguins are actually in decent position with +1000 odds.
Sure, the number seems high, but it’s tied for the seventh best odds in the East with the Florida Panthers who reached the Cup Final last year.
The Hurricanes walk out as the odds on leaders to take the East with +500; the Devils (+600), Toronto Maple Leafs (+600), Tampa Bay Lightning (+700), Boston Bruins (+800), and Rangers (+900) all have higher chances.
Here is where those making bets on the team might get the most value; the Penguins are currently a +2500 to win the Stanley Cup.
+2500 places them with the 13th best odds in the NHL, but there might not be stopping the Penguins if they get hot in the postseason.
All of the previous East teams stand ahead of the Penguins while the Colorado Avalanche (+900), Edmonton Oilers (+1000), Vegas Golden Knights (+1200), Dallas Stars (+1600), and Los Angeles Kings (+2000) all enter the conversation from the Western Conference.
Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang are beyond hungry to win again and new addition Erik Karlsson will be a huge help come playoff time.
