Could the Pittsburgh Penguins retire Jaromir Jagr's jersey next season?
The internet caught fire over the weekend as images of Jaromir Jagr filled the Pittsburgh Penguins' social media feeds. Jagr was in town for an autograph signing and stopped by PPG Paints Arena for a tour and a few gifts courtesy of the Penguins.
One of the images was of Penguins President of Business Operations Kevin Acklin and Jagr looking up at the rows of championship banners in the rafters, some of which Jagr helped raise back in the 1990s. The two may have also discussed where Jagr's number 68 jersey could one day reside.
It is set in stone that the next number to be retired by the Penguins will be that of Jaromir Jagr, but the only question is when. The conventional sequence of events would state that the Penguins will likely wait for Jagr to officially retire from hockey.
At 51 years of age, Jagr still plays for his hometown Kladno Knights, back in Czechia, not to mention his ownership stake in the team. Jagr played 26 games last season and has no reported interest in hanging up the skates yet.
However, with the current crop of Penguins superstars reaching the final few years of their careers, the Penguins may not want to wait for Jagr's playing days to conclude. Jagr's visit to Pittsburgh is the latest in a long string of stories connecting Jagr back to the franchise he began his NHL career with, and next season may be the perfect time to immortalize his career.
With Penguins owners Fenway Sports Group cleaning house to appoint their new hockey operations staff and the core of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang entering the final years of their respective careers, there would be no better time to honor the past as the franchise begins moving towards the future.
