The Pittsburgh Penguins have started the second round of interviews for their front office.
You know well enough by now that the Pittsburgh Penguins are on the hunt for new faces to take over in their front office.
After a month without a president or general manager, the Penguins are reportedly ready for phase two of the interview process.
Elliotte Friedman said on the 32 Thoughts Podcast that there are plenty of names that Fenway Sports Group expressed interest in, but only a few are being linked to the second phase.
Former Arizona Coyotes general manager John Chayka has slowly emerged as a top candidate for the Penguins.
Friedman says that if the Penguins aren’t set on Chayka, the list of candidates heading into the second phase include Eric Tulsky, Mathieu Darche, Jason Karmanos, Steve Greeley, and Dan MacKinnon.
Tulsky, Darche, and Karmanos aren’t new names to this process, but Greeley and MacKinnon are late additions.
Greeley is currently the director of hockey strategy/scouting and development with the Dallas Stars and has been with their organization since 2021.
The Stars recently defeated the Seattle Kraken in seven games to advance to the Western Conference Final against the Vegas Golden Knights.
MacKinnon has been working with the New Jersey Devils organization since 2016; prior to being hired by the Devils he spent 10 years with the Penguins.
During his time in Pittsburgh, MacKinnon spent a majority of the years as director of player personnel.
The Devils had a revitalized season in 2022-23, reaching the postseason for the first time since 2018 and even defeated the New York Rangers in the opening round.
The Penguins are looking to acquire a general manager and a president of hockey operations as two separate hires.
It isn’t clear who is interviewing for what job.
