The odds remain in the Pittsburgh Penguins favor to reach the postseason for the 17th consecutive season.
PITTSBURGH - After spotting the Columbus Blue Jackets four goals, the Pittsburgh Penguins battled back for an overtime victory.
The game probably never should have gotten to that point, but the Penguins need every point they can get and every win is massive for their push to the playoffs.
There are a handful of other teams currently in a dog fight for the the two Eastern Conference wild card spots, and the race continues to tighten.
According to moneypuck.com, the Penguins lead the race in terms of percentage chance to make the playoffs.
From the second wild card position, the Penguins hold a 91.5% chance to reach the playoffs, well above the New York Islanders who are in the first wild card position.
The Islanders sit with a 51.6% chance, which is a nice bump following their own important win over another bubble team.
Following the Penguins and Islanders in the playoff race, the Florida Panthers (33.5%), Ottawa Senators (19.6%), and Buffalo Sabres (6.1%), all still have fighting chances.
The Washington Capitals (5.8%) and Detroit Red Wings (.9%) are still around, but have seemingly thrown up the white flag on the season following the trade deadline.
The Penguins and Islanders have outside chances of reaching the New York Rangers for third in the Metropolitan Division.
It’s unlikely, and a lot of things need to go right, but the Penguins have three games in a week against the Rangers that could make or break their season.
Before the Penguins can get to that, however, they face off against the Islanders one last time.
The Penguins have three games in hand, but will need to come up with a big game against the Islanders to closer seal their spot in the 2023 Playoffs.
