Penguins Sign Goalie Garret Sparks to AHL Contract

The Pittsburgh Penguins continue to add to their goaltending depth.

What would the Penguins and Capitals look like if Evgeni Malkin and Alex Ovechkin swapped Draft spots?

The Pittsburgh Penguins organization didn’t have much depth at the goaltending position heading into the offseason.

In the matter of a couple of months, however, the Penguins have eight goalies with NHL experience or are vying for professional roles.

It was announced that the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins signed goalie Garret Sparks to a one-year deal at the AHL level.

Sparks joins the organization with 40 career games at the NHL level and a record of 15-18-2.

At 30-years-old, Sparks has played in 178 career AHL contests and holds a 99-59-11 record with a .921 save percentage.

This will be Sparks’ 11th season in professional hockey and won’t make the Penguins’ NHL roster, but is another name to add to a suddenly deep goalie depth chart.

Sparks joins Alex Nedeljkovic and Magnus Hellberg as new goalies to the Penguins organization that have NHL experience.

The Penguins goalie depth chart now reads as Tristan Jarry, Casey DeSmith, Nedeljkovic, Hellberg, and Sparks.

Following those more veteran names, prospects Joel Blomqvist, Taylor Gauthier, and Sergei Murashov are also in the Penguins’ system.

President of hockey operations Kyle Dubas said the goaltending position is possibly the most important in the sport, and judging by the replenished cupboard of goalies, he means it.
