The Pittsburgh Penguins have officially started adding to their lineup with a trade to acquire a recent Stanley Cup Champion.

First reported by Kevin Weekes of ESPN, the Penguins are trading a 2024 third round pick to the Vegas Golden Knights for Reilly Smith.

An original member of the Golden Knights, Smith is a 32-year-old right winger that carries a contract that lasts another two seasons and earns him $5 million per year.

In 78 games last season, Smith recorded 26 goals and 56 total points and has been one of the true leaders in the Golden Knights locker room since day one.

The Golden Knights took Smith from the Florida Panthers in the 2017 Expansion Draft and he’s been one of Vegas’ staples ever since.

In 399 games with the Golden Knights, Smith has totaled 124 goals, 162 assists, and 286 points.

Kyle Dubas’ plan for the Penguins this offseason focused building out the depth and looking at cap strapped teams and seeing who they might want to sell off.

The Golden Knights have been up against the cap for the last few seasons and this move should give them some breathing room.

Even after adding Smith, the Penguins still have about $15 million in space to work with and continue to add to the lineup.

This kind of trade does, however, likely mean Jason Zucker will not return to Pittsburgh.
