Penguins Willing To Wait Through Weekend To Make GM Hire

The Pittsburgh Penguins are close to making their front office hire, but it could last through the long weekend.

Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk is enjoying a breakout performance en route to the Stanley Cup Final, but which Pittsburgh Penguin had a similar run back in 2009?

Most of the population within the United States are ready to dive head first into the long Memorial Day weekend, while fans of the Pittsburgh Penguins await the biggest news of the offseason.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG) has been searching for a new staff in the Penguins’ front office since the start of their offseason and the search has to be nearing a conclusion.

The team was likely ready to make an announcement until a Kyle Dubas-sized wrench was thrown into the mix and everything was put on pause.

As Memorial Day rolls around, however, how much longer are FSG and the Penguins willing to wait to make their hire?

According to Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts Podcast, the Penguins are prepared to wait through the long weekend.

The Penguins want to make sure Dubas and his family are ready for the transition to Pittsburgh and working in an NHL front office again.

In Dubas’ last press conference with the Toronto Maple Leafs, he noted the toll the last year took on him and his family and hinted at the idea of taking time off to recalibrate.

Not long after, Dubas told the Maple Leafs he wanted to stay on as their GM, but he was subsequently let go by the team.

The Penguins swooped in requesting permission to talk with the now free agent executive.

Dubas has seemingly gone through an interview process and even met with Sidney Crosby at the Penguins’ practice facility.

Friedman noted that if Dubas wants the job in Pittsburgh, it’s his for the taking.

Another note on why the Penguins announcement may take the weekend, multiple members of FSG are in Europe for the F1 Monaco Grand Prix, set to take place on May 28.

With the long weekend ahead for the States, and FSG willing to give Dubas all the time he needs to decide, maybe an announcement will roll around by Tuesday.
