The Pittsburgh Penguins have questions surrounding their forward depth, and Conor Garland might have the answers.
As the NHL trade deadline closed in, there was all kinds of discussion between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Vancouver Canucks.
Through those talks, the Penguins were linked to both Brock Boeser and Pittsburgh native J.T. Miller, but neither player ended up departing Vancouver.
With the offseason well underway for both teams, it might be time to stir up those conversations again, albeit with a new name in the mix.
Boeser has stated that he doesn’t want to be dealt from the Canucks, and the Penguins would be smart to avoid the Miller contract if possible.
Why not take a stab at Conor Garland? He’s a name that has appeared on the Penguins’ radar before, but this summer could be a great opportunity for both parties.
The Canucks are reportedly shopping Garland and looking to get his contact off of their books.

Garland is a 27-year-old winger who earns just under $5 million against the salary cap.
$4.95 million might be a lot to stick in the bottom six, but the Penguins need major renovations to their depth and Garland could be the perfect boost.
In the midst of the prime of his career, Garland finished the 2022-23 season with 81 games played recording 17 goals and 29 assists for 46 points.
For a little comparable, Bryan Rust totaled 46 points (20G-26A) but stayed in the top-six all season.
The Penguins are will have about an extra $20 million in cap space to play with and a first round pick that doesn’t need to stick around.
It’s obvious the Penguins and Canucks have had plenty of communication before, why not shift the focus to a useful player with a more realistic contract?
Garland is currently representing Team USA as an alternate captain at the IIHF World Championship.
