The Pittsburgh Penguins seem close to hiring Kyle Dubas, but will there be anyone who follows from Toronto?

With the final hours of the memorial day weekend upon us, the Pittsburgh Penguins should be making the announcement of a new general manager at any moment.

With the search nearing its conclusion, all signs for the Penguins continue to point in the direction of Kyle Dubas.

According to Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts Podcast, the organization is prepping themselves for a Dubas arrival.

While other candidates like Mathieu Darche and Steve Greeley have not been taken out of the race, it’s Dubas’ job if he wants it.

One question that continues to be brought up around Dubas, however, is if any of his partners from the Toronto Maple Leafs will follow.

Names like head coach Sheldon Keefe, assistant general manager Brandon Pridham, or special assistant Jason Spezza have all been listed as possibilities to follow Dubas wherever he may go.

A Keefe arrival in Pittsburgh seems a bit unlikely considering the amount of pull Mike Sullivan has with the Penguins and Pridham is currently acting as Toronto’s general manager while they look for the Dubas replacement.

That does leave the door open for Spezza, however, as he resigned from the Maple Leafs on the same day they let go of Dubas.

Spezza retired from playing after the 2021-22 season and was quickly hired to be Dubas' special assistant in Toronto.

After just one season Spezza called it quits in the Maple Leafs' front office; considering the timing of the departure, it's fair to wonder if the Dubas situation played a hand.

Jeff Marek and Friedman discussed the idea of Spezza following Dubas, but they weren’t sure if he wants to move his family out of Toronto.

The Ottawa Senators are closing in on being sold and a front office shake up could follow; Spezza played 11 seasons in Ottawa and now with front office experience it would make sense for him to wind up there at some point.
