The Pittsburgh Penguins probably won't have a general manager for the foreseeable future.

The Pittsburgh Penguins probably won't have a general manager for the foreseeable future.

Fans of the Pittsburgh Penguins got what they wanted when it was announced Kyle Dubas was hired as president of hockey operations.

With Dubas taking that kind of title, however, speculation immediately began regarding who he may hire as the next Penguins’ general manager.

As it turns out, however, that hire may not come any time soon; Dubas stated during his initial press conference that he would work as GM on an interim basis and begin the search at a later time.

Dubas is doing a thorough review of every aspect of the Penguins and likely won’t make a general manager hire any time soon.

Part of the reason a rift was formed between Dubas and the Toronto Maple Leafs was that he wanted more control of the team.

Dubas has that in Pittsburgh; he is the sole person in charge making decisions and doesn’t need to consult with many people.

Not only does Dubas likely not want to hire a GM, but he doesn’t need to.

Dubas is a skilled enough executive that he doesn’t need another powerful voice taking control in the Penguins front office.

Hires will likely be made eventually, but none of them will be official general managers.

Maybe they take up smaller assistant level roles, but it’s highly unlikely, and unnecessary for Dubas to hire a GM in the near future.
