The Pittsburgh Penguins want a better season, and Mike Sullivan will be a big reason for the improvements.

There is no doubt that the players that take the ice night in and night out for the Pittsburgh Penguins look to be better in 2023-24, but what about behind the bench?

Penguins’ head coach Mike Sullivan is usually one of the best coaches the NHL has to offer, but something seemed off in 2022-23.

Sullivan recognized that last season wasn’t great, but there are already plans in place to be a better squad moving forward.

The coaching staff took a hard look at every area of the team during the offseason and looked for where things can be improved upon.

“We always try to take a deep dive into our own team and into our coaching staff,” Sullivan said. “The first question I always ask myself… ‘how do we improve and get better?’ We certainly have to do a better job of coaching our players.”

Sullivan noted that he and his staff need to lead by example and look to get better every day but he also holds his players to higher standards.

“There’s a number of areas where we have to do a better job as a coaching staff,” Sullivan said. “In coaching our players to be better in certain situations. And also holding out players accountable.”

Moving forward, Sullivan is focused on making the Penguins a stronger team with the necessary tweaks and adjustments.

It’s the players on the ice that ultimately decide how good the Penguins will be this season, but Sullivan believes it is up to the staff to set everyone up for the best chance of success.

Sullivan will use this training camp and preseason as a place to hone the Penguins lineup and make the proper tweaks and tactical adjustments to put the best team on the ice.
