The Pittsburgh Penguins make their 2023 preseason debut with a split squad matchup against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
After the longest layoff in nearly two decades, the Pittsburgh Penguins make their much anticipated return to preseason action. For the third year in a row the Penguins and division foe the Columbus Blue Jackets are opening up their preseason schedules with a split squad matchup. One group will play in Pittsburgh at 1:00 p.m. and the other group will play in Columbus at 7:00 p.m.
While the Pens top brass won't be in the lineup, there will be plenty to keep an eye on in the preseason openers. Here's what to watch for in both contests.
1. Brayden Yager's professional debut
The Penguins' first round pick will make his Pittsburgh debut at PPG Paints Arena this afternoon. After standing out during the Prospects Challenge in Buffalo, Yager has a chance to show his skills in front of the Penguins' faithful for the first time.
While Yager has a slim chance to make the Penguins' opening night roster, his offensive abilities are impressive. He can give the organization and fans a glimpse into the player he can become while playing with professionals for the first time in his young career.
2. Back-up Battle
Tristan Jarry won't play in either game today, but the two goalies battling for the back-up position will see action. Presumptive number two goaltender, Alex Nedeljkovic will get the start in Pittsburgh and Magnus Hellberg will get the nod in Columbus. "Ned" has the inside track to backing up Jarry, getting vocal support from head coach Mike Sullivan in the early parts of camp.
Don’t count out the enigmatic Hellberg. With less NHL experience, he will most likely be in Wilkes-Barre to start the season, but his size and agility make him a dark horse to stick with the big club.
Both goaltenders should receive 20-40 minutes of ice time today, giving them the chance to make the first steps towards solidifying the questionable back-up goaltending in Pittsburgh.
3. Can the PTO's stand out?
All five players invited to training camp on try-out agreements will be on the ice today for the Penguins. Defenseman Libor Hajek and forward Peter Abbandonato will skate in Pittsburgh and defenseman Mark Pysyk and forwards Austin Wagner and Colin White will play in Columbus.
As it stands, each player has their work cut out still to earn a contract. If Wagner or White can produce consistently in the preseason, one of them may find a way into the team's bottom six. Similarly, Hajek could steal the final left side defenseman spot with the NHL squad if he outplays P.O. Joseph and Ty Smith.
The first game kicks off at 1:00pm at PPG Paints Arena and the second one drops the puck at 7:00pm at Nationwide Arena.
