Ryan Poehling was not given a qualifying offer by the Pittsburgh Penguins and will join the cross-state rival.

The first Pittsburgh Penguins free agent has moved out of town. After opting to not qualify restricted free agent forward Ryan Poehling, he moved on to cross-state rival the Philadelphia Flyers.

First reported by Jeff Marek, Poehling signed a one-year deal with the Flyers that will pay him $1.4 million.

Poehling played just one season with the Penguins. He arrived via trade from Montreal along with Jeff Petry in return for Mike Matheson in the summer of 2022. In one season, he played in 53 games in mostly a fourth line role. Known for his incredible speed and penalty killing, Poehling failed to contribute significantly on offense. He chipped in only seven goals, and added seven assists.

With Poehling’s departure, the Penguins have another bottom six role to replace. Kyle Dubas will need to dip further into free agency or the trade market to round out the lineup heading into next season.
