The Red Wings delay their search for a new permanent general manager with an interim move on Tuesday.
Pittsburgh Penguins' prospect Will Horcoff may not be moving anywhere this year as he heads back to the University of Michigan for a second full season, but his father is making some moves within his current front office.
On Tuesday, Will's father, Shawn - former center who played 15 NHL seasons - was named Interim General Manager of the Detroit Red Wings and General Manager of the Red Wings' AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins. The 47-year-old was previously the Assistant General Manager of the Red Wings.
As specified in a statement releaased by the organization, Horcoff's new duties will include daily roster decisions, issues concerning the team's salary cap, and managing hockey operations and personnel.
This decision comes to bridge the gap with the search for a new permanent general manager, as Detroit announced earlier this summer that franchise legend Steve Yzerman would no longer serve as the team's general manager. As part of the Horcoff announcement, the Red Wings also confirmed what was already pretty much known about Yzerman transitioning to the role of Senior Advisor to the Governor and CEO, Chris Ilitch.
Horcoff was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the fourth round (99th overall) of the 1998 draft, and he spent 12 seasons with the Oilers and was, briefly, the team's captain. For the final three seasons of his NHL career, he played for the Dallas Stars and Anaheim Ducks. In 1008 career games, Horcoff amassed 186 goals and 511 points.
Will, 19, was selected 24th overall by the Penguins in 2025 and was recently named the organization's sixth-ranked prospect by THN - Pittsburgh Penguins.
