The Pittsburgh Penguins are putting everything on the table for their power play, here is a new option.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are putting everything on the table for their power play, here is a new option.

All anyone has been able to talk about when discussing the Pittsburgh Penguins as of late is their power play and the struggles to get that group off the ground.

With each passing game, the Penguins seem to get worse and worse with the man advantage, most recently letting a 5-on-3 opportunity slip away and extending the scoreless streak to 12 straight games.

Over that span, they’ve missed on 33 opportunities and have legitimately cost numerous standings points along the way.

Heading into the year, the Penguins were expected to have one of the top power play units in the NHL thanks to the addition of Erik Karlsson on defense.

Ever since Karlsson arrived in Pittsburgh, however, their power play has been anything but potent; after 25 games the Penguins have scored just seven power play goals on 71 chances for a 9.86% success rate which sits 30th in the NHL.

The Penguins have tried multiple different combinations and looks with personnel, but there is one move that they’ve avoided so far.

Since we’ve all hit the point of trying literally anything, it might be time to take Karlsson off of that top unit and let Kris Letang take over again.

Over the course of his career, Karlsson has never really been a strong quarterback on the power play, finishing in the top 10 in success rate just once.

Sure, Karlsson has produced more than Letang over his career, but not by much.

In 945 games played, Karlsson has recorded 42 career goals and 235 assists for 277 points on the power play, while Letang has crossed 52 goals and 216 assists for 268 points in 1,030 games.

The separation isn’t much, but Letang also has a familiarity with the group in front of him.

Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin know how power plays are run under Letang, while Karlsson free wheels so much it’s hard to keep up with and learn from.

Karlsson has been fantastic at 5-on-5 and is better than expected defensively so stripping him of first line power play duties isn’t a knock against him.

The Penguins just need to exhaust literally every option and this is one they’ve never looked at.
