Marcus Pettersson can once again be a top defender for the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2023-24.

Marcus Pettersson can once again be a top defender for the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2023-24.

With the Pittsburgh Penguins 2023-24 season right around the corner, all eyes will be on the core of veterans and newcomer Erik Karlsson to see if they are able to reclaim a spot in the NHL Playoffs.

What many people won’t pay too much attention to, but absolutely should, is Karlsson’s linemate for his first year with the Penguins.

Marcus Pettersson turned in an outstanding year in terms of on-ice growth during the 2022-23 season.

In 68 games played last year, Pettersson occasionally found himself on the first line with Kris Letang and pushed all the way to 23 assists on the season.

While playing with a high-level offensive talent like Letang, Pettersson said he can feel himself become more of a mindful defenseman and overall a better player.

Being strapped to a line with Karlsson is a completely different animal, but Pettersson is ready for the challenge.

Pettersson said at the beginning of camp he is looking forward to becoming a more involved and useful defender that head coach Mike Sullivan can put on the ice at any situation.

Sullivan said that Pettersson was one of the most consistent players in a Penguins uniform last year and knows there are more steps that can be taken.

“I think there’s another level to Marcus,” Sullivan said. “He pushes himself extremely hard. He’s a very competitive guy.”

When it comes to using him in more situations, Sullivan is open to that idea and put a great deal of focus on the penalty kill.

“He’s gotten involved in the penalty kill more and more,” Sullivan said. “I think that’s an element where you’re going to see more of him. And that’s an opportunity for Marcus to help us.”

Pettersson is a mobile player for his size and is sure to elevate his game even more this year.

Playing alongside Karlsson will unlock numerous opportunities for Pettersson to step up not just on defense, but also on the offensive side of the ice.

Pettersson’s 24 total points last year was one shy of his career-high, and if he can feed off of some production from Karlsson, his numbers are sure to find a boost.
