With the Pittsburgh Penguins season winding down, Sidney Crosby isn't done reaching career milestones.
PITTSBURGH – Fans of the Pittsburgh Penguins have gotten used to captain Sidney Crosby reaching milestones and climbing up all-time lists in his nearly 20 years with the team. His most recent achievement might be among the most important accomplishments he’s ever had.
In the Penguins win over the New York Rangers, Crosby hit his 82nd point of the season, guaranteeing he will be a point-per-game player for the 19th consecutive time. That ties Crosby with Wayne Gretzky for the most all-time by an NHL player.
While that is an unbelievable accomplishment and a testament to Crosby’s consistency, he isn’t done knocking down milestones this season. Even with just eight games left, Crosby has more history to make.
Sitting at 997 career assists, Crosby is just three away from becoming the 14th player to ever hit 1,000 helpers. It’s well-documented that Crosby is an elite playmaker, and crossing the 1,000-assist threshold will cement that area of his game.
Beyond assists, Crosby has a chance to climb some of the biggest mountains in the NHL. With just six more points, he will enter the top 10 of all-time scoring in the NHL. With 1,584 total points, Crosby needs just seven more to pass Phil Esposito for 10th on the all time list.
While Crosby likely won’t reach new heights in career goal scoring, he is closing in on a season milestone that has been rare for him. With 37 goals on the season, he needs just three more to reach 40 goals for the third time in his career.
Crosby's previous two seasons with 40 goals were in 2009-10 (51) and 2016-17 (44); both years he led the league in goals for his only two Rocket Richard Trophies. A third Rocket is unlikely for Crosby, but another 40-goal year could go far for an underrated part of his game.
His goal-scoring may be underrated, but it shouldn’t take long for him to hit another big milestone in the 2024-25 season. Crosby currently has 587 career goals, 13 shy of 600.
Crosby won’t be hunting down the likes of Gretzky or Ovechkin for all-time goals, but quite a few players are within Crosby’s striking distance for next season.
Also within reach for Crosby during the 2024-25 season is hitting point 1,600.
All of these personal stats add up to solidifying Crosby as one of the greatest hockey players of all time. The numbers would be even higher had he not suffered serious injuries at crucial points through his career. Despite the time missed, Crosby is still keeping up with some of the most notable names to ever lace a pair of skates.
