Pittsburgh Penguins’ captain Sidney Crosby continues his historic season with his 40th goal of the season.
PITTSBURGH- All of a sudden, the Pittsburgh Penguins are rolling. Down and out just weeks ago, the Pens are in a playoff position again thanks to their hot stretch of games. Propelled by four straight wins, they have a legitimate shot at making the postseason.
Leading the charge for the Penguins, unsurprisingly, is Sidney Crosby. He's on an offensive tear lately, with 17 points over the last 10 games. After a brief dry spell after the deadline, he's brought his season total to 85 points in 77 games played. In a nail-biting victory over the Lightning, the captain also notched his 40th goal of the season.
It can't be stated enough how impressive this season has been for Crosby. He's climbed to 11th place in the NHL's all-time scoring list, and is just a few points of being a top-10 scorer in league history. He also cemented himself as the only other player besides Wayne Gretzky to average a point per game for 19 consecutive seasons.
At 36 years old, production is supposed to dip. It's expected that players are long past their prime at that point, and are supposed to ride off into their career sunset. That is anything but true for Sidney Crosby, who seems to collect points and accolades like candy these days. Not only has he almost single-handedly willed the Pens to a postseason spot, he raised his goal scoring abilities in order to do so. This is just Sid's third 40+ goal season in his storied career, with the last one coming back in 2016-2017.
The latest milestone for Sid has placed him amongst even more elite company. After his latest tally, he became just the fifth 36 year-old in NHL history to reach 40 goals in a season. Joining the ranks of Alex Ovechkin, Teemu Selanne, Phil Esposito, and Brendan Shanahan, Crosby's third 40+ goal season of his career has been one for the history books.
And he's not done. With five games left in the regular season, there's still time for Sid to climb even higher up the NHL's all-time scoring list. Phil Esposito holds the 10th spot on the scoring list with 1590 points. At 1587 points after the teams' latest win, Crosby is poised to add another notch in his career cap before season's end. And the Penguins may just sneak into the playoffs due to another MVP season from Sidney Crosby.
