The Pittsburgh Penguins had a number of players who deserve some shine after a huge win on Long Island.

The Pittsburgh Penguins had a number of players who deserve some shine after a huge win on Long Island.

After the brief holiday break, the Pittsburgh Penguins restarted their 2023-24 season with a vengeance and put up seven goals in a routing of the New York Islanders.

While players like Kris Letang, Evgeni Malkin, and Valtteri Puustinen stole the show for the Penguins, there were a couple of names whose performances shouldn’t go unnoticed.

Primary among those names is goaltender Tristan Jarry who posted his league leading fourth shutout of the season.

Jarry wasn’t tested much against the Islanders, facing only 22 shots, but he stepped up when he needed to.

The shutout performance was earned after the final frame when the Islanders found some rhythm on offense and recorded 11 shots on the period; Jarry stood tall, though, and kept the puck out of his net.

Heading into this season, everyone knew keeping Jarry around was a risk, and after a slower start he’s bounced back to look like one of the best goalies in the NHL.

At 10-11-2, Jarry is still working to get a higher winning percentage, but his stats have been much improved.

In 23 games played, Jarry holds a .916 save percentage and 2.49 goals against average.

While Jarry made every save, another blue liner had a career game; Letang’s linemate Marcus Pettersson posted a career-high four assists.

Pettersson is yet to score a goal this season, but his four helpers pushed him into the top 10 of team scoring.

“I had great players around me,” Pettersson said. “Great plays by Tanger on a couple of them. I think we as a pair had a good night.”

In 33 games played this year, Pettersson now has a total of 14 points and holds a team leading plus-17 rating.

Collecting a plus-five against the Islanders really went a long way in pushing his +/-.

The 7-0 routing of the Islanders wasn’t just a big win for the Penguins or a huge night for guys like Letang and Malkin, it was important for Jarry and Pettersson to also chip in the way they did.

It was a complete team victory on Long Island.
