If the Pittsburgh Penguins want big changes, here are some big name targets.
The Pittsburgh Penguins need big changes to their lineup, and incoming president of hockey operations Kyle Dubas needs to make a big first move in the front office.
Dubas has been known as one of the most aggressive general managers in the NHL and now as Penguins president will look to bring that same mindset.
For Dubas to start making positive changes in Pittsburgh, he’s going to have to make a few splash trades right away.
Each of these deals would cost the Penguins, but they would turn into net positives for everyone involved.
The Winnipeg Jets are ready to undergo a massive overhaul, and one of the names that is pretty much already out the door is Pierre-Luc Dubois.
While it’s basically pre-determined that Dubois only has interest in the Montreal Canadiens, there has been talk that he is willing to broaden his horizons.
This is where Dubas can step in and take a swing for the Penguins with a trade for Dubois’ rights.
Dubois is currently a restricted free agent and in need of a new contract; he won’t be cheap, but he might be affordable.
Given how well known it is that Dubois wants out of Winnipeg, the Jets don’t have much leverage in his trade.
The trade itself might not cost the Penguins a ton, but the contract is where things might get steep.
Still affordable, however, despite all of the demands and wants Dubois has, he only scored 63 points (27G-36A) in 2022-23.
Could he produce more than that? Probably, but he’s not a guy that can make too much past his last number of $6 million.
Shockingly only 24-years-old, Clayton Keller is one of the many players who likely want out of the situation around the Arizona Coyotes.
Keller has five years remaining on a contract that earns him $7.15 annually, and won’t have a no-trade clause kick in until the 2024-25 season.
The Coyotes would be free to move Keller to wherever in the NHL and the Penguins would be a great home.
That’s an affordable price tag, especially for the Penguins who usually can’t take on a player worth that kind of money.
Keller could play next to Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin and reap the benefits; the Masterton Trophy finalist played in all 82 games in 2022-23 scoring a career high 86 points (37G-49A).
The Penguins have space to work with this offseason and should take a stab at Keller if he is truly unsure on the future of the Coyotes.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are another team in need of change, and Dubas has plenty of familiarity with that organization.
With the amount of change that needs to arrive in Toronto, Mitch Marner could become trade fodder.
Heading the other way in a deal like this, however, would have to at least involve Jake Guentzel.
You never want to trade a 40-goal scorer like Guentzel, but in return you get someone who can float around 100 points regularly.
Marner is a surefire superstar that would more than help the Penguins in the final years of Crosby, Malkin, and Kris Letang.
