What were some of the highs and lows of the 2022-23 Pittsburgh Penguins?
Most will remember the 2022-23 Pittsburgh Penguins season as the year that they lost the playoff streak, but there was a lot more to this season than that. Here are some of the best and worst moments of the year.
Best Win
The Penguins' best wins this season were overshadowed by the disappointing losses and missing the postseason. However, this group had a handful of terrific wins throughout the year. One game in which the Penguins were the best versions of themselves was a 5-2 road win against the Colorado Avalanche.
It is no easy task to play against the defending champions on the road while on a four-game losing streak. But the Penguins came out flying and kept their intensity for the better part of that game. The top six were their usual selves, and Jeff Carter provided two timely goals. Tristan Jarry also put together one of his best performances of the season, stopping 28 of 30 shots.
Worst Loss
Many will agree that the loss to the Chicago Blackhawks is by far the worst loss of the season and potentially Sidney Crosby's career. Besides that implosion, the worst loss of the season was a 7-2 home loss to the Edmonton Oilers. It has always been a must-see matchup when Crosby and Connor McDavid square off.
McDavid and the Oilers were above and beyond anything the Penguins could handle that night. It was one of the few times this season where the Penguins looked like they didn't belong on the same sheet of ice as their opponent for 60 minutes.
Biggest Disappointment
Apart from missing the playoffs for the first time since 2006, the biggest disappointment was the injuries for goaltender Tristan Jarry. Jarry entered the year looking to prove to everyone that he could be a number one goaltender in this league answering questions about his ability to carry a team and perform in the playoffs.
Unfortunately, a chronic hip issue plagued him for what appeared to be the entire season. Questions about his ability to carry a team remain unanswered as his contract negotiations begin this summer.
Best Moment
It was a season of memorable moments for the Penguin's "Big Three." From the home opener, where Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang emerged after signing deals to likely finish their careers in Pittsburgh, to Sidney Crosby's 1,500th point, the top players for the Penguins carried this team all year.
However, the one moment that transcends all others was Kris Letang's return game on January 24th. Letang has missed almost a month due to a lower-body injury and the passing of his father, Claude.
In his first game since his father's passing, Letang lit up the Florida Panthers for four points (2G - 2A), including the overtime-winning goal, assisted by Malkin and Crosby.
