Kyle Dubas followed a clear plan when rebuilding the Pittsburgh Penguins lineup.
Summer is nearing its end for hockey fans, but the Pittsburgh Penguins continue to add to their training camp roster. The Penguins continued their stockpiling of bottom-six forwards over the weekend, signing Colin White to a Professional Tryout (PTO).
White becomes the fourth player to sign a PTO with the Penguins this season, joining forward Austin Wagner and defensemen Libor Hajek and Mark Pysyk.
The 26-year-old forward fits the mold the Penguins have targeted all summer for their depth forwards. If White makes the roster, he will become another speedy, defensive-minded forward with position flexibility (he plays center and right-wing).
A Boston native, White has shown scoring ability before at the NHL level, scoring 41 points (14G-27A) in his first full season in 2018-19 with the Ottawa Senators. His performance that season earned him a 6-year contract extension from the Sens that would pay him $4.75 million per season, a deal the Senators bought out due to a few underwhelming seasons and injury issues.
With the addition of White, a distinct pattern continues to be followed by Dubas. Early in the offseason, Dubas targeted proven veteran depth forwards like Lars Eller, Matt Nieto, and Noel Acciari to be the base of this new bottom-six.
Since then, the Penguins' focus has shifted to add youth and speed to their forward depth. They signed forwards Andreas Johnsson and Vinnie Hinostroza to one-year contracts and brought in White and fellow 2015 draft pick Austin Wagner on PTO contracts.
However, the unifying thread through every signing has been defensive efficiency. Depth scoring may still be an issue for the Penguins, but for the first time in a few years, they will have an identity, and adding Colin White gives them another option to build off of.
