Penguins First-Rounder Building Off Stellar Season

The Pittsburgh Penguins have inked one player to an extension this offseason.

Drew O'Connor had a breakout season in 2023-24 with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

After two quiet weeks following the season, the Pittsburgh Penguins have finally conducted a little business. The Penguins re-signed Sam Poulin to a two-year contract extension.

Poulin is coming off his best season since being drafted in the first round by the Penguins in 2019. He scored 31 points (16G-15A) in 41 games with the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins of the AHL.

Injuries prevented Poulin from making an NHL impact for most of the season. He couldn't capitalize on strong rookie and training camps due to a lower-body injury that cost him extended playing time early in the season. He earned a call-up late in the season, playing three games and getting another small taste of NHL action.

Poulin was one of the best Penguins at the AHL level this season. As the Penguins seek to get younger, Poulin may be in prime position to earn a roster spot out of camp this fall.

Some believe Poulin's development has been too slow, but he's only 23 years old and proved in 2023-24 that he can be a true 200-foot player with offensive upside.

If he can stay on the ice, he will be an integral piece of the Penguins youth movement. With his contract situation resolved, Poulin can prepare for a massive year as he looks to establish himself at the NHL level.
