San Jose Sharks head coach David Quinn talked openly after practice today about what his team is going through.
It is hard to say how bad the San Jose Sharks have been to start the 23-24 NHL season.
Their record of 0-9-1 is the worst in team history. The offense has scored ten goals in ten games. Sharks head coach David Quinn talked to THN after practice today and talked about what has gone wrong.
"That's a tough pill to swallow what happened last night, and I know that didn't feel good at all after the game," Quinn said. "You could sense we had to do some repairing this morning, and we had a good meeting. I thought the practice was good."
Quinn acknowledged that because the team plays tomorrow against the Pittsburgh Penguins, it is easier to move on. He feels the players don't have to think about the Vancouver Canucks anymore.
A trend of good practices not translating into good game performances has hurt the Sharks all season. Every player, coach, and media member has recognized the work ethic and effectiveness that goes on during their practices.
"It's a process, and I touched on this last night. That's not going to happen overnight," Quinn said. "One of the things that I think is happening is that when you press, and you want to make an impact, you start getting away from doing the things you do and become less predictable. I think that's when you look disjointed. That's what's happened. It's crept into our game."
The seed of doubt has shown whenever the Sharks have held a lead. Against the Washington Capitals, the Sharks held a 1-0 lead in the third period. Once the Caps scored to tie, the entire feel of the game favored Washington.
"The way this has developed, we have let 2, 3, 4 losses build, and it's affected the next game," Quinn said. "Frustration and doubt creeps in when you keep losing. You doubt yourself, you doubt your teammates, and you doubt everything. That's what losing does."
San Jose will face Erik Karlsson and the Pittsburgh Penguins tomorrow with the hopes of earning their first win this season.
