Dean Tait - Hockey Shots - Quinn Hughes' 5-Point Night Sinks Sharks; Canucks Dominate 10-1

Quinn Hughes and the Vancouver Canucks beat the San Jose Sharks 10-1 on Thursday night, making this the worst start in Sharks franchise history.

"I've never been in a situation like this," Sharks forward Nico Sturm said. "I don't think any of us have to be honest with you. I only know that I'm gonna show up to practice tomorrow and work hard."

The Sharks now sit with a record of 0-9-1 this season. Their previous worst start to the season was 0-8-0-1 in 1993-94. The one in 1993 was a tie to the Boston Bruins.

Hughes finished with a goal and four assists. Brock Boeser, Elias Pettersson, and J.T. Miller had three points for Vancouver. Pius Suter scored his first goal as a member of the Canucks. Ilya Mikheyev, Andrei Kuzmenko, Sam Lafferty, and Anthony Beauvillier also scored. Thatcher Demko stopped 29 shots.

Fabian Zetterlund scored his third goal of the season. Kaapo Kahkonen started for the Sharks but was pulled after the sixth goal. He made 13 saves. Mackenzie Blackwood stopped ten shots in relief.

"There's a reason these guys are in this league," Sharks head coach David Quinn said. "You've got to not only have physical talent, but you also have to have mental talent to recover from nights like tonight and recover from the start we've had in general."

Hughes was the best player on the ice by far. He continues his superstar start to the season, with his point total now at 16.

    FIRST PERIOD:

    2:23: Brock Boeser goes bar-down with a powerplay one-timer. 1-0 Canucks.

4:00: J.T. Miller with a sweet backhand shot to make it 2-0 Canucks. It was another powerplay goal.

8:00: Hughes throws the puck to the net, and the puck goes off of Kahkonen's glove and in. 3-0 Canucks.

16:49: Boeser gets his second powerplay goal of the night. 4-0 Canucks.

Everything that could've gone wrong went wrong for the Sharks in that period. Kahkonen looked like he was fighting the puck, and the penalty kill went 0/3.

    SECOND PERIOD:

1:03: Ilya Mikheyev makes it 5-0 as he sits wide open next to the net.

8:47: Kuzmenko beats Kahkonen to the short side to make it 6-0. Backwood enters the game in relief.

    12:35: Lafferty beats Blackwood with a wrap-around. 7-0 Canucks.

17:26: Suter gets his first goal of the season. Hughes gets his fourth assist, his fifth point of the night. 8-0 Canucks

    THIRD PERIOD:

3:10: Beauvillier scores on the powerplay. 9-0 Canucks.

11:58: Anthony Beauvillier scores his second of the game. 10-0 Canucks
