San Jose Sharks forward William Eklund completed a trade before Thursday night's game against the Calgary Flames.
During pregame warmups, Eklund noticed a fan with a sign asking him for a signed stick. In return, Eklund would get a bag of Sour Patch Kids.
13-year-old Rylan Jamieson and his father, Rob, had no idea that Eklund would see him and follow through with the trade.
Rylan now has a core San Jose Sharks memory that doesn't come at the SAP Center.
"We didn't even know it would happen when driving to the arena last night. Just sat and waited," Rob told THN. "He skated by a few times, then on one of his passes, he looked like he read the sign and smiled… that was a good sign."
But why Sour Patch Kids?
"Earlier this week, my son came to me and said he wanted to try the candy for stick trade sign with Eklund," Rob told THN. "I tried my best to find all the info on my own but just couldn't crack the code of the candy that would facilitate the trade."
Luckily for Rob and Rylan, Rob knew someone within the Sharks organization and got a response in time after Eklund was asked directly about what candy he liked best.
But how did Rylan and Rob become Sharks fans?
"I was nearly his age when the Sharks came into the league. My team's name in Calgary was the Sharks that year, and we got Sharks jerseys," Rob said. "It became his first jersey."
Eklund might be down a stick for candy, but he has created a memory that a father and son won't forget for a lifetime.
