The San Jose Sharks will visit the Washington Capitals tonight to try to extend their winning streak to three.
San Jose is looking for its second three-game winning streak of the season, and to do that, three things need to happen.
Macklin Celebrini, Will Smith, and Timothy Liljegren are on four-game point streaks. Celebrini will have a tough assignment tonight as he will likely go up against the Capitals' top line, which includes Dylan Strome and Tom Wilson.
However, the true key is keeping the defense scoring, like Liljegren. The 25-year-old defenseman has two goals and two assists in the last four games and has quietly been producing since he arrived in San Jose.
Capitals forward Connor McMichael is having a breakout season with 14 goals and 24 points in 24 games. Not only is McMichael scoring a ton, but he's also an elite skater who gets high-danger shots off multiple times a game.
According to NHL EDGE, McMichael has 37 high-danger shots this season, which puts him in the 98th percentile.
San Jose must limit McMichael's chances, especially at even strength, to give themselves the best chance to win.
Winning is fun, and this Sharks team has been experiencing more wins over the past few seasons than the last few seasons. Celebrini is winning league awards, but he only cares about winning and enjoying the games because of victories.
"It's obviously nice, but I think the bigger thing is we're winning some games right now and we're scoring a lot of goals as a team," Celebrini told Tom Gulitti of NHL.com yesterday. "It's not one guy or a couple guys. I feel like we're getting it from our defensemen. We're getting it from all throughout our lineup. It's nice to have that camaraderie and that chemistry throughout the lineup."
San Jose is playing with speed, passion, and connectivity, which are three things head coach Ryan Warsofsky has been messaging. The Capitals are having a great season, and it will be a tough test for a young San Jose Sharks team.
