Neville E. Guard-USA TODAY Sports - Three Takeaways From Sharks 5-0 Loss To Oilers

The San Jose Sharks were dismantled by the Edmonton Oilers 5-0 last night, and there are three main takeaways.

There were many decisions made last night that led to a bad start. San Jose was behind all night when the puck dropped and gave up a goal one minute in.

    1. Magnus Chrona shouldn't have started

Magnus Chrona got his first career NHL start last night. Unfortunately, it only lasted a period. Chrona was pulled after giving up four goals in the first.

"I feel bad for him. We didn't do a good job playing defense in front of him tonight. You take them out, really [to] protect them in many ways and not subject him to our lapses defensively," Sharks coach David Quinn said postgame.

While getting his first start is special, Chrona shouldn't have started. The Sharks were on the second game of a back-to-back but had two days off before their next game. After the game, Quinn said Mackenzie Blackwood was "feeling much better" from his illness.

Based on what Quinn says, if Blackwood is to be available for Sunday's game, why not start Kahkonen on back-to-back nights? It doesn't help that the team didn't play well in front of Chrona, but the point still stands.

    2. Attention to detail on defense is missing

While the Sharks are not getting hemmed in their zone for as long as they did the first month of the season, they are not playing well defensively.

Teams like the Oilers have no problem entering the zone and passing around the outside. The issue is when the Sharks eventually get the puck, they are giving it right back to the opposition.

They are also not boxing out the front of the net very well. Leon Draisaitl's goal last night was a perfect example.

"If you're gonna have a chance to beat that team, you've got to be committed to playing defense, and we just got away from structure tonight defensively big time," Quinn said.

    3. The offense has gone missing

After scoring 26 goals in five games on the road, the San Jose Sharks offense has reverted to being unable to score.

In the eight games since the long road trip ended, San Jose has scored 12 goals. Quinn has said the team has been cheating for offense. Tomas Hertl felt the team had some good opportunities last night but couldn't finish.

"Lately, because we try pushing, we feel like we have the scoring chances, we don't put them in," Hertl said.

The Sharks need to score more and defend better, but isn't that what every NHL team wants?
