San Jose Sharks goalie Mackenzie Blackwood is starting at the Prudential Center against the New Jersey Devils for the first time since he was acquired by the Sharks in 2022.
Blackwood didn't face his former team when the Sharks visited New Jersey last season. He faced them when the Devils came to SAP Center but left the game with an injury.
"Just a little groin injury there. I mean, I feel like I already played them in that game. But now I feel a lot less about the game," Blackwood said. "Obviously, [with that team] the year prior, it's a little bit extra something."
Blackwood stopped 13 shots in 17:34 before he left. The netminder said this year still has some meaning, but not as much because he's another year removed from the Devils organization.
"Now, second year, I don't know. I'm pretty far away from that, so I don't have a lot of extra stuff," Blackwood said. "It's obviously just another game, but, you know, you'd like to go out and have a good one, but you want two [points] every other night too. So you do the best you can."
Blackwood played 152 games for the Devils and was drafted in the second round of the 2015 draft.
"Maybe just because [I] played there a little bit, you have a little bit of familiarity. I mean, lots of the guys on that team are still there from when I was there," Blackwood said. "Maybe talking to them a little bit, but I don't know. [I'm just] trying to get to the point when you're playing the game that [and] you're not really thinking about it."
When asked if he has any butterflies about tonight's game, the netminder responded in the only way he can: "Not really."
