We’re officially just 53 days away from the San Jose Sharks kicking off their season at the SAP Center against the Vegas Golden Knights.

In Sharks history, there have been six players to wear the number 53. The first was Jesse Fibiger in 2003, and the most recent is Ty Dellandrea, who still wears it today. Let’s take a look back at all six players who have worn the number and what they did during their time with the organization.

First, as mentioned above, Fibiger wore it during the 2002-03 season but not for long. He only played 16 games that year, which also marked the entirety of his NHL career. In those games, he failed to record a single point and picked up two penalty minutes.

Next up is the most famous player to ever wear the number 53, although only briefly before switching to his iconic #8, Joe Pavelski. In his rookie season, Pavelski played 46 games and scored 14 goals and 14 assists for 28 points. He went on to spend 12 more years with the Sharks, totaling 963 games played, 355 goals and 406 assists for 761 points. After leaving San Jose, he played five years with the Dallas Stars before retiring after the 2023-24 season. Pavelski ended his career with 1,332 games, 476 goals, and 592 assists for 1,068 points.

Ryan Vesce followed, playing 19 games for the Sharks over two seasons from 2008 to 2010. He recorded three goals and two assists for five points while adding four penalty minutes.

Nicolas Meloche wore the number next, appearing in 57 games over two seasons from 2020 to 2022. During his time with the Sharks, he wore both 53 and 46. He scored two goals and six assists for eight points while racking up 39 penalty minutes.

C.J. Suess is another player whose time with San Jose was brief. In the 2022-23 season, he played only one game and did not record a point, though he did register two penalty minutes.

Lastly, we have Dellandrea, who wore the number last season and is still with the Sharks heading into 2025-26. He had one goal and seven assists for eight points in 68 games. Before joining San Jose, he spent four seasons with the Dallas Stars, recording 14 goals and 28 assists for 42 points in 151 games.
