During the introductory press conference for new San Jose Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky, GM Mike Grier shut down a rumor suggesting that he is looking to trade Logan Couture.
The Q&A portion of the media availability had finished up, and before the proceedings had finished, Grier stepped up to the mic and shut down the false claim.
"Just one more thing I want to put to bed for you media guys. [There is] stuff out there saying that I'm looking to trade Logan Couture or anything like that; that is absolutely false," Grier said.
Couture played six games last season after dealing with a deep groin/hip issue. During his exit interview, the captain said his goal was to return to the ice in July. Neither Warsofsky nor Grier provided an update on his injury recovery.
"If you look at us bringing in young players and having a young team, he's exactly the type of person you want to have around," Grier explained. "He's our captain. Our leader. He had a tough year, but we love him as a person, most importantly. He is still a heck of a hockey player."
During a media scrum after the official event had ended, Warsofsky compared Couture to Boston Bruins legend Patrice Bergeron.
"I grew up in Boston watching Patrice Bergeron. He is Patrice Bergeron on the West Coast. The way he plays. The way he prepares. He leads this group. He's an addition to the coaching staff, and the way he sees the game is really, really bright," Warsofsky said. "I told him when he's done playing, I'd love to get him to be on the bench coaching. I don't know if he'll do it, but he's got a great mind for the game. I'm happy he's with us."
