Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports - Devils Forward Could Return Against Sharks

The San Jose Sharks take on the New Jersey Devils for the first time tonight, and Timo Meier has a chance to play against his former team.

During his pregame media availability, Devils head coach Lindy Ruff said that Meier had skated on his own for the second consecutive day.

"Timo is doing well," Ruff said yesterday. "We'll see where he's at for tomorrow. I would say he's a possibility."

Meier has not played since Nov. 14 against the Winnipeg Jets due to a lower-body injury. The exact nature of his injury is not clear. Meier played the entire game and had 19:22 time on ice.

There was also no clear moment in the game that Meier sustained the injury.

THN's Devils reporter Kristy Flannery said on Friday that she did not expect Meier to play against the Sharks.

"I wouldn't expect Meier to play versus San Jose," Flannery said Friday. "He has been skating on his own, according to head coach Lindy Ruff, but has not joined his team for practice."

Much like Tomas Hertl last night, expect some confusion and uncertainty regarding Meier's availability.

If he plays, this will be the first time in his career he will play against the Sharks. San Jose Acquired Fabian Zetterlund, Nikita Okhotiuk, and Shakir Mukhamadullin from the deal at last season's deadline.

Lindy Ruff is expected to meet with the media approximately two hours before tonight's game, so an update on Meier should come then.
