Former San Jose Sharks defenseman Brent Burns recently signed with the Colorado Avalanche. Not only does this give him a chance to finally hoist the Stanley Cup for the first time in his career, it also gives him the chance to keep playing and potentially break the NHL Ironman streak.
Currently, he sits at 925 consecutive games and holds the fourth-longest streak in NHL history. He’s now only 140 games behind Phil Kessel, who owns the record at 1,064 games. Burns' streak started back on November 21, 2013, when he was a member of the Sharks.
His contract with the Avalanche is a one-year deal with an average annual value of $1 million. At 40 years old, his time in the NHL is running out, so staying healthy will be key if he wants a real shot at chasing the record. If he plays all 82 games next season, he would still need to suit up for 58 more the year after that to catch Kessel.
Burns started his career 21 years ago, in 2003–04 with the Minnesota Wild. He played seven seasons there before being traded to San Jose in 2011. He then spent 11 years with the Sharks and became a household name around the league. In 2022, he was dealt to the Carolina Hurricanes, where he played three seasons. Now, he’ll try his luck with the Avalanche.
In 21 years, he has played in 1,497 games and scored 261 goals and 649 assists for 910 points. It’s truly impressive that of those 1,497 games, 925 of them have been played consecutively.
Additionally, if he can score 50 or more points this season, he would move within 40 points of the 1,000-point club. Right now, he sits 90 points away. And based on how he’s played the last few seasons, he probably has one or two more productive years left in the tank.
