Team USA and Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy was initially expected to play against Team Canada in the 4 Nations Face-Off Championship on Thursday, a source told THN, but a change has occurred.
THN can confirm a report that McAvoy has gone to the hospital for precautionary reasons due to an upper-body injury. A source has confirmed Jim McBride's report to THN as true.
The Bruins have confirmed that McAvoy is dealing with an infection and reportedly had a procedure to clean the infected area.
McAvoy missed Monday's final group-stage game against Team Sweden with a reported upper-body injury.
"[The] injury happened in the first game then he played like that against Canada," the source told THN. "No reason to play. Take the rest."
McAvoy was a physical presence against Canada, finishing with five hits, including two on Sidney Crosby and two on Connor McDavid.
"It would take an act of god himself to keep him out of [the championship game]," the source said.
McAvoy missed seven games with an upper-body injury for the Bruins but returned and played the final five games before the 4 Nations break.
Team USA beat Canada 3-1 on Saturday and will rematch for the first-ever 4 Nations Face-Off championship.
