On Wednesday, the San Jose Sharks waived defenseman Leon Gawanke for reassignment to the AHL.

Gawanke was acquired from the Winnipeg Jets this offseason in exchange for Artemi Knyazev. Gawanke finished tied for first among defensemen in the AHL in goals last season.

Although Gawanke wasn't having a bad training camp, he hadn't done anything to stand out.

San Jose also claimed Ty Emberson off waivers from the New York Rangers on Saturday. Emberson was impressive in his first action with Team Teal.

With Nikita Okhotiuk also receiving high praise, Gawanke fell behind on the depth chart.

His main competition in camp was arguably Jacob MacDonald. Last night, MacDonald was the QB of the second powerplay unit. He scored and showed why he was put there over Gawanke.

Teams will have 24 hours to claim Gawanke; if he goes unclaimed, he will head to the San Jose Barracuda.
