The San Jose Sharks have placed goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood on IR.
Magnus Chrona has been recalled and will be the backup to Kaapo Kahkonen.
The trade deadline is approaching, and this injury could significantly impact the Sharks plans. While Blackwood's name has floated in rumors, Kahkonen's name has been more prominent.
After this season, Kahkonen will be an unrestricted free agent, have reinvented himself, and become a quality goalie for the Sharks. Depending on the severity of Blackwood's injury, the Sharks may opt to keep Kahkonen.
Magnus Chrona is not a lousy goalie; he isn't ready for the NHL. He has appeared in two games in the NHL this season and allowed eight goals on 29 shots.
In 24 games with the San Jose Barracuda this season, he sports a 5-13-4 record, 3.51 GAA, and a .892 save %.
The Sharks are rebuilding, and while losing will only help get them better odds for the No. 1 overall pick, they need to play with some dignity. After last night's 7-2 defeat by the New Jersey Devils, that was apparent from head coach David Quinn.
Blackwood has dealt with injuries during his career; this was the healthiest season since he first entered the NHL. Although Quinn didn't know the extent of the injury, he knew that if it were long-term, he would feel for Blackwood.
"If it's an extended period of time, I'll really feel bad for him if it's something short-term that can happen to anybody in the season," Quinn said postgame. "He's been healthy all year. We'll see what the verdict is."
Blackwood and Kahkonen have been a terrific tandem for the Sharks, and losing one of them hurts, especially a guy with Blackwood's injury history.
