Mason Morelli made his NHL debut today and finished with a goal and an assist as the Vegas Golden Knights beat the San Jose Sharks 4-0 on Monday afternoon.
The Golden Knights also got goals from William Karlsson, Keegan Kolesar, and Michael Amadio. Logan Thompson made 29 saves for his first shutout of the season.
The Sharks were shutout for the ninth time this season, tying a franchise record for most times shutout in a season. They have been shut out nine times in a single season on three occasions. Mackenzie Blackwood did everything he could, making high-danger save after high-danger save. He made 22 saves.
San Jose started with a flurry of chances and hit the crossbar twice before three minutes had gone in the first period. There seemed to be a lack of bite to the entire Sharks game. They sunk in very deep defensively and struggled to pressure the offensive attack of the Knights.
"We started out great. We're ready to play. First two and a half minutes we were buzzing. Crossbars. Chances. Then we gave up like our 38th breakaway in three games. It's just inexcusable. It can't happen," Sharks head coach David Quinn said.
Henry Thrun returned to the Sharks lineup after dealing with an upper-body injury, and Alexander Barabanov was a healthy scratch after a mistake in his last game.
"They just capitalized on their opportunities and we didn't on ours," Kevin Labanc said postgame. "We got a lot of good looks got a lot of good chances, but we just didn't have the boucnes go our way."
After dominating play early, Michael Amadio gets behind the defense for a breakaway and scores his 8th goal of the season. San Jose gave up a lot of breakaways to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday.
William Karlsson scored his 17th goal of the season after the Sharks gave up many chances in front of their goal.
Mason Morelli scores his first NHL goal to put the Golden Knights up 3-0.
Keegan Kolesar scores his 5th goal of the season after Alec Martinez made a great pass. Morelli picked up a secondary assist on this goal.
